Our Goals -
Intramural Position Statement
Recognizing
that this period of early adolescence is characterized by the most dramatic
change in the physical, psychological, social, emotional, and intellectual
growth of the individual since that first year of life, it is imperative
that we treat the members of this age group with the special care that
their fragile personalities require.
They are not little adults; they are not little high school students;
and they are not big elementary kids. They are, however, a unique combination
of all three. They are constantly striving for discovery, development,
and refinement of their own individual personalities.
It
is because of this relentless search for their place in life that we must
provide them all with the opportunities to explore and grow, while striving
to be their best, without the fear and disappointment of failure.
How can
this be accomplished? By creating schools that foster an environment rich
in opportunity and void of rejection.
How is
it possible to be void of rejection? This is possible through a broad-based
activity program founded on the principle that all kids should have an equal
opportunity to experience the thrill of finding belonging and significance
in their life. All activities should be performance based, not outcomes based.
No one suffers the agony of defeat, because without the pressure to win, the
absence of winning is not losing.
Intramural
coordinators of today are liberated from the strict regimentation of State
High School Activity Associations. They are creative in adapting and modifying
games to meet the needs of their participating students and school facilities.
This new approach in structuring and modifying activities allows more students
(and ultimately, all students) to be involved successfully.
In these
rapidly changing times, when the disengaged families of America are asking
schools to provide more and more development and guidance for their kids,
it is these quality broad-based, activity programs that provide stability,
guidance, and the opportunity for the creation of a healthy self-image. These
programs are based on the type of self confidence that can be best established
through successful interpersonal relations.
Successful
programs are aimed as much at the moral, ethical, and values development
of early adolescents as they are at promoting athletic skills and the
learning of game strategies. Intramurals are seen as an essential part
of the total development of all early adolescents. The notion that athletics
are too valuable a resource to be wasted only on the talented and the
early maturers is the philosophical foundation of all quality intramural
programs.
Everyone
participates. Everyone is encouraged to do their own personal best. Everyone
is a WINNER!
