This afternoon, Fort Scott Middle School and Fort Scott High School were notified by the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department that a student in each building had tested positive for COVID-19. As a result of the COVID-19 positive student, the middle school and high school administration are performing close contact tracing and are contacting the families of those students who will need to go into quarantine as a close contact.
Before learning of these positive COVID-19 cases this afternoon, USD 234 had no other students or staff who had active COVID-19 cases. Before today’s notification from the health department, USD 234 had 12 students and 2 staff in quarantine across the district, which all were household contacts.
The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, loss of taste and smell, vomiting, and diarrhea. Individuals who need medical care should call their medical provider to report their illness prior to seeking care at a clinic, physician’s office, or hospital. Parents of students who are exhibiting COVID-19 like symptoms are encouraged to contact a school nurse, local health personnel, or the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department for guidance.
We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with updates as we know more. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s building.
